I do feel like I am taking a shit when I am on Twitter, Facebook, or blog comment (like now...)
Go out, seek for adventure, find a spot, and pee/shit on it. (Note: done with 100% respect to the owner of the site)
Unlike dogshit, our footprint stays there semi-permanently. How annoying...the only way to redeem this sin is to make each comment/shit valuable in some way. I have never mentioned shit this much in a single paragraph. Please delete this comment if you want to. No hurt feeling.

Nice article Chris. I always like to keep in mind that interacting with your target market via social media is a lot like interacting face to face. Listening is the most important skill to have in a two way conversation. If you are not listeing to your audience you don't you'll never know just what the really need. If you can't fulfill their needs you will lose their attention.

I couldn't agree more with all your points, Monica! And you are right,
nobody is going to be perfect (especially not me, that is for sure). I
appreciate your comments, and look forward to connecting with you further.

These are great tips.

In general, being a jerk or passive aggressive is just a bad all-around idea. And it's critical to be aware that if you're not interesting and not contributing anything of value, there's really little point for anyone to continue following you.

The automation is exactly that - anti-social. When I give talks, I try to impart that automation is fine, if it's something you feel you will forget if you don't pre-schedule, and if you are reasonably confident that you will be around your computer when the tweet goes out. That way, you're not just broadcasting.

Of course, I make mistakes. Sometimes I don't listen enough - sometimes I get overwhelmed by how much is our there. And sometimes I pre-schedule a tweet with the idea that I'll be there immi to check responses, and I anticipate wrong. (These are just a few of my errors, I'm sure I make more.)

Just like you can only attempt to be the best person you can be, you can only do your best to be responsible via social media. If you're aware that you're not the "only guest at the party" that should help considerably.
